100 Yen: The Japanese Arcade Experience

100 YEN: The Japanese Arcade Experience from Brad Crawford on Vimeo.

Some big news on the independent film project "100 Yen: The Japanese Arcade Experience." The film makers have not only met their $9,000 budget requirement through donations, they surpassed it by receiving $14,598 presently! This is great news for the still young Strata Studios based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Strata Studios was formed by Brad Crawford and Bryan Verot. Well, now for me to get out my soap box and give you my 2 cents on the trailer.

100 Yen looks to be a pretty entertaining film. I am extremely curious to see how the film turns out and what is covered by the documentary. I am especially interested in whether or not the film makers (or people being interviewed) are going to try and bring up the "arcades are dead" issue. Just from the trailer alone you get a lovely bit from the senior editor of Kotaku Brian Ashcraft saying how "living in Japan...if you like video games you'll notice very quickly that they still have arcades." Now I know this is a brief clip of the interview, I am just tired of the whole "arcades are dead" mantra that has been circling around the net. It especially gets annoying when you see and hear about new arcades opening up in the U.S. while some game centers (Japanese Arcades) have been closing recently. We can't forget that some large game companies such as Capcom have been taking a step back from producing some arcade versions of games like the upcoming Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 (thankfully the outcry of the fans might cause a similar situation that occurred with Super Street Fighter IV, a console release first with arcade kits following). Again this is only a small bit and hopefully Brian discusses further his thoughts.

Another clip from the trailer has the tattoo artist Ben Her discussing how Japanese people generally use walking as the major mode of transportation and how the foot traffic in the cities provide a steady stream of customers for the game centers. Personally I agree completely with this. In the cities of Japan the majority of the people walk and ride the rails to get around. Train stations in areas like Tokyo even have huge department stores built around them. These department stores often times include some sort of game center nearby. The U.S. lacks this type of set up and generally requires someone to get in their car and drive to an arcade location. From my experience living in Tokyo and the U.S., this to me is a huge reason why game centers are more abundant in Japan then arcades in the U.S. The other interview clips include some famous professional gamers like Ryan "Gootecks"Gutierrez and Daigo "The Beast" Umehara.

If you want to get behind this film and get either some cool swag (dvd, shirts pins, etc.), or you would like to have your name in the credits, be sure to look into donating money to the film. They have a really cool donation tiered system to let you know what you will get, plus some awesome prizes that can be won for donating. $50 bucks will get you some awesome stuff like a a T-shirt, dvd, pins or stickers, and a mentioning in the credits. Donations will be open for a couple more days so if you would like to help out be sure to go to Indie GOGO and donate. Even though Strata Studio has met their minimum budget amount, the money donated will still go towards the film (probably the post production costs).

More Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 News!

Big thanks to Ultimagame.com for the first videos!

What started a few days as a leak from the German version of Gamepro Magazine is now true! The Sentinel and Hsien-Ko/Lei-Lei are coming to Marvel Vs. Capcom 3!

Since I only really used Victor and Sasquatch in Darkstalkers, I don't have much to say about Lei-Lie. From what I'm told she can be an excellent rush-down character and as you can see in the video, she's got a lot of tricks up her sleeves. Literally! ::Rimshot::

Now we move on to the monster, Sentinel. After reading some of the sites I visit it seems that NOW people are being turned off on the game with his inclusion. It's kind of a double edged sword. Hardcore fans would be angry if he wasn't in the game and casual fans who thought he was too tough in MvC2 are mad because he's in. Personally I used Sentinel in Children of The Atom and also in MvC2 so I'm happy to see him back. Since its not even a two minute long video we can't tell if he's been hit with the Nerf Stick or not, so lets wait and see before we get ahead of ourselves.

A few days ago Edge posted a great interview with the game's producer, Ryota Niitsuma where he may be hinting at a possible arcade version of the game. Saying it's "Not impossible" also saying they'll judge it on how well the home versions sell. So let me say this as bluntly as possible, PREORDER THE GAME NOW!! Let's help bring Marvel Vs. Capcom back to the arcades where it belongs! For the full interview, you can read it here.

Now that it looks like the roster is finally finished for Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, which characters do you want to see added in Via DLC? For me I want to see Strider for Capcom and Psylocke for Marvel. Who do you want to see? Drop a comment!

Oni and Evil Ryu in Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition

It was just reported last night that the two hidden characters, Evil Ryu and Oni have finally been unlocked in Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition. All of the major Street Fighter sites have been covering this since the news broke. The two new characters can pull off some really crazy stuff. Oni can not only air dash but can preform the Raging Demon in the air as well! Evil Ryu has a great looking dive kick as well as a really insane second ultra. Rather then just posting what I think, I'll just provide the links to the experts along with extra videos and more.

Big thanks to everybody at Iplaywinner.com, SRK, Tonycrust and PIKACHUAKUMA from Youtube for the excellent videos and coverage of the story!

UPDATE

Well, as you may have seen the videos are being taken off of Youtube. Nothing official from Capcom but it sounds like the characters weren't supposed to be unlocked yet. So unless I hear something official I'll let you know.

Also more rumors fueling the SSFIV Arcade Edition rumors are an icon of what many people are saying is Hugo is hidden in the game. If you watch this video that's on Capcom's official Youtube channel you will see the M.Bison/Vega player has what looks very much like Hugo for his icon. Skip to about 4:25 in the clip and judge for yourself.

Could this mean that Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition has even more secrets up it's sleeves? I guess time will only tell. Once I hear about it I'll be sure to let you know! Stay tuned for the newest updates. We're going to try our best to make it out to China Town Fair in New York City to play the game, where they have SIX units of the game set up to play! I know I'll be beaten badly but I can't wait to try it out.

Nick's News Roundup and Virtua Cop 3!

Hey folks! Nick back once again with my weekly news roundup of all things arcade gaming that has been on my radar.

First you'll notice a new video I shot using my iPod Touch. The week after Christmas 2600 and I went to the local Dave and Busters to give the camera feature a test drive and here's the first test of it. As you can see other then not getting the marquee the video quality is excellent a MAJOR step above what I was using before. I'm really happy with how it came out. The biggest problem though is the size of the files. Because I don't want to just upload raw footage I have to put it through my Vegas editor. I want to have them in high quality MP4's but the files are HUGE. I've tried to find a 720p option but for some reason its not offered on Vegas, if anybody can help me out with this, let me know. Most sites will not take videos over a gig in size so I gotta be careful at how long they are.

Now onto the news!

For a while it was reported that California arcade, Arcade Infinity would be closing on the 15th of January. Thankfully due to the outcry of fans has helped save it! You can read all about it over at Arcade Heroes. We'd like to send all of our best wishes out to the folks at Arcade Infinity and hope they keep open for many years to come!

I wish we were able to make it out to both ends of California to check out all of the amazing arcades that are out there. I'm so glad that the community was able to band together to keep AI open.

Also from our friends at Arcade Heroes and The Stinger Report is news of an arcade version of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Arcade. This is an arcade port of the home version and right now the game is in public test at a Chuck E. Cheese. It looks to be a straight port of the home version with no added characters or stages, so far. Not much else is known about it, but if you'd like to read some more about it and see a very quick video of the game in action feel free to click the link and check it out.

Now for news in the pinball world. In case you're not following the news on Facebook, Stern Pinball has shown off their new game, The Rolling Stones at a trade show in Germany. For a while the rumors went around of what the next game would be. Many like myself thought it would be Tron, others thought it was going to be another music related game since Stern worked on Elvis and Gun & Roses. (When they were Data East) As of now little is known about how far into the process the game is. The main toy of the game is a moving target of Mick Jagger that moves around the playfield like a cross between the Big Buck in Big Buck Hunter and Dracula in Monster Bash. If you'd like to check out pictures of the game, click the link below!

Finally we have some news from our friends at Funspot. ACAM has started their $25,000 fundraiser. They want to help raise money to help repair some of the games they have in storage so they can be played on the museum floor. Please donate what you can to help out! All your donations are tax deductible and all of the money goes right back to keeping these classic arcade games alive and in tip top shape.

So that's the news of the week. Thanks for checking out the video and we'll be back next week with a whole lot more good stuff!

Sarge's Midweek Update

Sarge here with your midweek update.

For all of our UK/PAL viewers out there, the wait is over. Deathsmiles:Deluxe Edition for Xbox 360 is now set for a February 18th, 2011 release! What does this mean? This version of Deathsmiles will include the Mega Black Label DLC, a desktop accessory pack for your PC, and the original soundtrack. You will also get the three modes: Arcade, Xbox 360 mode, and Version 1.1. So technically, you're getting four versions of the game for £29.99. Considering that the soundtrack was only released in Japan separately for an additional £25, you can't beat that deal! Click on the photo below to head to Rising Star Games' Deathsmiles website.

This leads into my next topic with regards to people complaining about the lack of substance in these Cave ports. Considering how much the Deathsmiles: Mega Black Label PCB Kit goes for (anywhere between $1500.00 -$2000.00 USD depending where you look), these port releases have been a godsend to those not will willing to shell out an exorbitant amount of cash for one game. The fact that you also get the other versions of the game as well adds to that value of $50.00 USD. Maybe people like to complain about stretching the dollar these days, but this is one deal that I can't see as a ripoff. We've noticed a couple of posts out here on various forums with people actually complaining about the port price. As a Cave PCB collector, I will never look a gift horse in the mouth when a company wants to release a good port of an expensive game.

Sarge's question of the week: Cave, Toaplan, Eighting/Raizing, etc. Name your favorite STG/Shumup and why. Post in the comment section below.

Sarge Out!

Akuma and Taskmaster Confirmed!

It's official! Taskmaster and Akuma are on the roster for Marvel Vs. Capcom 3!

Akuma is a fitting choice. He was a hidden character in X-Men Children of the Atom and it looks like Capcom has decided to keep the tradition going. He plays just like he always has with fireballs, dive kicks and the Raging Demon. I really hope there will be a Cyber Akuma costume to unlock for him.

Taskmaster was rumored for a while. First there was the Twitter post, then the uncolored comic book pages. So today they have finally official announced him. Now for those of you who don't know who Taskmaster is, he goes WAY back into Marvel Comics. He has a photographic memory that allows him to copy any physical move he sees. So he uses a shield like Captain America, bow and arrows like Hawkeye, guns like The Punisher and his sword comes from when he copied The Black Knight. When villains need somebody to train their henchmen, they turn to the Taskmaster.

If you'd like to see more of Taskmaster and Akuma in action, check out this link from Famitsu. (Other sites have the same two videos, but the quality is much better on the link)

This is only proving the leaks that came from Twitter a few months ago. So if it's true we have Hsien-Ko/Lei-Lei for Capcom and Sentinel for Marvel. I know some people are a little mad that Mega Man, Strider and for me Gambit might not be in the game, but who knows? There's still a chance of more DLC characters after Jill and Shuma-Gorath. So I guess we'll have to wait and see!

Game Underground, Framingham Mass.

I was able to go down to Framingham, Mass. and check out a great store/arcade combo called Game Underground. Game Underground is not only a new and used video game store that covers consoles from the Atari 2600 all the way up to the PS3, but also a mini arcade with TV's set up for console gaming. The arcade games they currently have are a linked Initial D 4 with (working card reader), Drummania 5th mix, Street Fighter 2 Pinball, DDr Supernova, a Global VR ultracade, Dance Maniax, A Neo-Geo "Big Red," Tekken 3 (currently being traded for something truly special), air hockey table, and a IIDX machine that belongs to the local Bemani community.

Game Underground is almost a mix of a mom and pop video game store with a mom and pop arcade. They hold numerous events and tournaments, get togethers, the works. They usually hold fighter tournaments, 1st person shooter tournaments, air hockey tournaments, and a weekly wrestling get together. You can check out their store and calendar by clicking here.

Besides all this gaming goodness, they have a passionate and knowledgable staff who are more then willing to provide you with knowledge and anecdotes to keep you entertained. The general climate in the place is one that truly needs to be experienced. Game Underground manages to reel in that feeling of hanging out in someones basement. The atmosphere is very relaxed while the competition remains fierce.

Oh, and they got a mini stage set up for Rock Band. You can truly lose yourself in this place for hours. I myself spent hours playing Initial D 4, Street Fighter II pinball, BSing, and browsing for some classic gaming gems.

So if you're ever in the Framingham Mass. area, be sure check out Game Underground at:

MvC3 News and More!

Keeping up with the Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 news here's the newest trailers for the two new characters being added into the game! Mayor Mike Haggar and Phoenix!

The Mayor of Metro City has a ton of moves straight from Final Fight. He looks like he can dish out a ton of damage. I love how they added in a pipe that he can swing for extra range. His Level 3 Hyper Combo looks insane. I can't wait to try him out.

Phoenix sounds like she's going to be VERY interesting. She looks like a bit of a rush down character and to me a little bit of KoF's Athena and a little Psylock, but it's her "Dark Phoenix" mode that sounds really crazy. If you have a full five level super meeter and Phoenix dies, she comes back as Dark Phoenix. An insanely powerful version of her that has fireballs coming out of nearly every attack she does. There comes a catch though. When you become Dark Phoenix your heath constantly goes down till she burns out. I can see her being used a lot.

G4 has a new interview on their site with Capcom's Seth Killian explaining the two new characters. You can watch it here.

They've also changed the X-Factor in the current build of the game. When I played MvC3 at the New York Comic Con you pretty much used X-Factor for a damage boost and it would regenerate your red health. Now not only does it all of that, but it also returns your character to a neutral stance so you can pretty much do two level 1 hyper combos. The more characters you have in your party, the less time and damage you get. So you can use it early to keep a combo going or if you need it to heal your roster and give you some extra power. Just make sure you find the best time to use it because you only get one per match.

One last bit of MvC3 news. A website online had an "advance review" of the game and they might have leaked another character. Akuma. I think it's fitting that they added him into the roster if the rumor is true. If you go way back to when X-Men Children of The Atom came out Akuma was a hidden character in the game. So I think having in MvC3 is a nice touch. I hope one of his costumes will be "Cyber Akuma" from Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter. He was a cheap bastard.

All I can say is February 15th can't come soon enough. I've already preordered the special edition from Capcom Direct. I will have a full review of the game in the following weeks after the game's release. Here's hoping that Capcom will bring it to the arcades once again for the fans that have kept Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 going strong for over ten years.

Now we have a very special announcement! A brand new arcade will be opening next week in New Hampshire! For a while now Sara St. John from MyArcadeRepair.Com has been helping out at Funspot during the past arcade tournaments. Now she has finally opened up her own arcade with 200 plus arcade games and over 70 pinball tables! This has also gotten covered over on Kotaku as well as Arcade Heroes and you can read the article here.

We here at Arcade Hunters wish Sara and her husband the best of luck for their new arcade and we hope to bring you an Arcade Hunters episode from Pinball Wizard Arcade in the future!

So till next time, this is Nick saying have a great weekend and I'll see you back here next weekend!

Sarge's Midweek Update

Happy new year troops! Sarge here with your midweek update for this first full week of 2011.

In case you missed it last week, a 23 year old male from Clemson, South Carolina attempted to reenact the famous Seinfeld/George Costanza Frogger scene sans machine on a very busy highway intersection on December 29th. The unfortunate "Frogger/human player" did not succeed in making to the lily pad as he was abruptly stopped by a speeding Lexus SUV. While unfortunately hospitalized, he is currently in stable condition.

No comment from Jason Alexander was made following the unfortunate accident. We here at Arcade-Hunters.com advise our viewers to please use common sense while enjoying video games.

In other news, Pac-Man made an appearance the annual New Year's Rose Parade. Celebrating 30 years of dot chomping enjoyment, the Pac-Man float, balloon, marching band, and cheerleaders made their appearance at the 122-year old Tournament of Roses Parade. Videos of the float can be found here.

Both Nick! and 2600 have been working on the Sega Strike Fighter, Sega Airline Pilots, and the Dreadstorm Pirates videos. Be on the lookout for those reviews in the near future.

Sarge out!

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 iPhone/iPod Touch Review

Happy 2011 everybody! Hope you all had a happy and safe one.

Here is the review I did of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on my iPod Touch. Just to let you know, I shot this using the webcam I received as a gift, and this might be the last time I use it. I really want to know what the point is of being able to shoot in 720p HD if the camera can't capture motion. Even when I did the Tron Legacy review it was stuttering. It's a shame because I like how I can angle the camera on the desk right to my hands to get videos of it. I'm going to look for a better alternative for future videos. So just so you know the game isn't that choppy when you play it.

With UMK3 on the iOs (I think that's how they say it for both platforms) the game runs pretty smooth and I'm one of the few people that like the new 3D rendered characters. Although the fatalities look less violent. I do like how they simplified the controls so you can play it with your thumb. Unless they come out with that game pad attachment I wouldn't recommend using the classic six button layout. I wouldn't even want to try to do Sub-Zero's Ice Slide while trying to hold the touch at the same time. Other then that it's a decent entry and really cool to be playing it on what's pretty much a phone/MP3 player.

So enjoy today's review and keep checking back in for future updates.
