30th Anniversary Galaga Tournament at FunSpot XIII!

Just announced a few hours ago, FunSpot XIII will play host to the World Championships of Galaga! Here's the press release.

Weirs Beach, NH, 5/27/2011 – The annual International Classic Videogame Tournament at The American Classic Arcade Museum is quickly approaching. 2011 marks the 13th year for this historic event. The tournament will take place from Thursday, June 2 through Sunday, June 5, 2011. Tournament hours are Thursday Noon-10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-11 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $40 and includes 200 game tokens and a commemorative color poster provided courtesy of The American Classic Arcade Museum. This year's tournament is sponsored in part by Aurcade, Mix 94.1FM, The Planet 100.1, New Country 106.9 and Gamer Soda. The first 200 registrants will receive a commemorative T-shirt and goodie bag.

In an effort to maintain a fair and balanced playing field, the annual International Classic Videogame Tournament never announces the competition games until the first day of the event. We will be making an exception to this rule for the first “World Championships of Galaga®” sponsored by NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc.

Galaga was developed in Japan by NAMCO BANDAI Games and released to American arcades in 1981. The game puts you in control of a space ship that must destroy wave after wave of insect-like enemy space ships. Galaga remains one of the most popular arcade games of all time, and is available today on modern videogame consoles, smart phones, and other devices. For this competition, players will need to compete on five titles from the series including the original Galaga arcade game and various sequels that have been released to the arcades and home consoles over the years.

Gary Vincent, President of The American Classic Arcade Museum, looks forward to bringing this extra contest to the annual competition. “The American Classic Arcade Museum values our strong relationships with the videogame developers and publishers. As part of our mission, we feel it is very important for us to preserve the legacy of these important pieces of Americana. We are thrilled to work with NAMCO BANDAI Games to help celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Galaga.”

”We are excited to have The American Classic Arcade Museum help celebrate Galaga’s 30th anniversary,” said Carlson Choi, vice president of marketing for NAMCO BANDAI Games America. “Their commitment to the preservation of classic arcade games like Galaga allows generations of video game fans a fantastic look into a golden age of our industry’s history.”
